Hi!! My name is Jaelah. I'm a Graphic Designer/Visual Artist and Model living in Brooklyn. I grew up in the South. Born into a military family in a tiny town-Jacksonville, NC. Because of my dad being in the military, my family moved pretty frequently (never out of the U.S.- but still often). It wasn't easy moving a lot but it helped me learn to adapt to new places and new people. I have 3 sisters - 2 younger sisters and 1 older sister. Having them also helped make the moves a little easier.
Growing up I was always into the arts. I started playing piano in 3rd grade and took lessons all the way through college. Piano was my minor. I've always had a love of drawing, painting, and anything creative. Fast forward to today and I'm living a life that aligns with my creativity. My time is now split between working on my art business and modeling full-time. I made the decision to leave my "corporate job" in 2019 to focus on my modeling career. I won't lie, it was a little scary for a minute but I don't regret it. It pushed me to exactly where I needed to be.
Outside of shooting with different brands and photographers, I enjoy taking pictures of myself as well. There's something so interesting about coming up with concepts and executing them yourself. It's amazing the things you can do with a tripod, a sheet, remote and a cool outfit. I'm convinced my self-shoots are what got me through the crazy year that was 2020. Modeling is a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work! It isn't just standing in front of the camera and smiling. There's a lot that goes into it as far as mental health, nutrition, SKINCARE, etc. Your face and body are the art in modeling, so you have to take special care of yourself which can have its challenges.
First thing you do when you wake up/go to bed?
I immediately turn on music because music makes me happy. During that, I give myself a minute to actually wake up (I'm not a morning person) haha. After that, I brush my teeth, wash my face and shower. Having a skincare routine before applying makeup is SO important because it not only creates a smooth base for makeup but it also protects your skin from the makeup products you use. For me, doing makeup is another art form. I love doing fun eye shadow looks and trying new looks for photoshoots. Don't get me wrong though, I do enjoy going out with no makeup on too. Especially now that we have mask-life haha. Before going to bed I repeat my skincare routine, shower and throw on some comfortable pajamas. I like to put on calming music or a show I don't mind falling asleep to (shoutout to sleep timers!).
Favorite feature(s) on yourself and why?
My favorite feature on myself are my eyes. They're extremely expressive.
Do you have any rituals or routines that support your daily well-being?
Again music is huge for me. Music keeps me excited and helps with my mood. I also like to work on at least one piece of artwork per day. Even if I don't finish them the same day. Art really is therapeutic for me. Also, meditation.
What is your cultural and/or ethnic background?
I'm Black. Trinidadian & Guyanese to be more specific.
If you were to create the perfect beauty/wellness product for yourself, what would it be?
I would create a product for people like me on the go that need something not too complicated but effective. Definitely something hydrating and fresh feeling. Something that would last all day through photoshoots and different conditions.
What do you do to stay healthy?
I try to incorporate more vegetables into my meals. I used to hate vegetables but as I got older I realized there are so many ways to spice up your veggie game. Throughout the week I work out a few times with friends just for some balance and routine. I also try to portion-control as much as I can (even when I eat terrible) haha. Key word: TRY.
How do your work, lifestyle, and background affect your routine?
I'm always working on SOMETHING. Most of my artwork, plans and gigs are sporadic - freelance life. So, it's a bit hard to maintain a true regular routine because my life is the exact opposite. But it definitely keeps things interesting lol
Who or what inspires you most?
Seeing people live as their most authentic self. In the age of social media, it's very easy to scroll past someone and think "Wow, they seem so put together and perfect" but in reality we have no idea who that person actually is. We see smiles, laughs, confidence captured but often we don't get to see the flip side of that. Authenticity is so important and valuable. It takes vulnerability and if I'm honest I struggle with that. But I do see how helpful it can be to those inspired by us and even ourselves. We all want to be valued and loved for who we are. So as a model, I try to keep it as open and honest whenever I'm asked about my journey. Outside of that nature, beautiful things, beautiful people, and scenery inspire me artistically.
Being multifaceted is honestly so fun and rewarding. I'm evolving more and more each day. I'm excited for where I'm headed and I feel super thankful and humbled at where I am.
