Hi hi! I’m Micah (24). I was born in the East Village, raised in Greenwich Village, and later moved to Jersey, 30 minutes outside of Manhattan. I consider myself a New Yorker, but I really love sitting in grass, so I’m pretty lucky to spend my time equally between the two places. A year ago, I moved back home to live with my parents after living in Los Angeles for 2 years, Buenos Aires before that, and Boston before that. Living home after being on your own for a while isn’t the easiest transition, but I’m so grateful because living rent free (bless up) means my life the past year has been nothing short of awesome. It’s a really great feeling to feel content with my day-to-day life.
I work for my parents company, Schure Media Group, as a publicist. Unless I have an event, show, or photo shoot, I am able to work from the comfort of my home, which also means I get to work from the comfort of—well, anywhere I find comfortable. I travel as much as possible. I’m not really sure where I’d like to live, so I enjoy picking new cities where my friends live and crashing with them for a bit… I also take ballet classes wherever I go. Oh yeah — I’m a ballet dancer! I am currently training to become a professional ballet dancer. I danced for 13 years, quit for 7, and have been back for 2. I have a long way to go but it is my dream job.
I try to get out of bed between 7 and 8 AM. Because I work from home, I don’t have to take commuting into account (after living in LA, this is my dream come true). The first thing I do every morning is chug water. I wake up so damn dehydrated! 8-10 hours without water is hard on my body. Yes, I aim to sleep 8-10 hours every night. I’d be very, very tired without that much sleep. I cannot continue my day without breakfast. I wake up very hungry. I once sleep-ate plantains my sister brought in my room when I was taking a nap. Anyways, I follow an ovo-pescetarian diet: the only animal products I eat are eggs, fish, and honey. This diet came to fruition one year ago after being sick and tired of being sick and tired everyday since 10th grade. One year ago, I got VERY sick after eating some meat and I went cold-turkey (no pun intended). Moving on. For breakfast, I usually will have a green smoothie, eggs and toast, or oatmeal. I just gave up coffee in an effort to clear my hormonal acne. Pray 4 me!!!!!! If I am sleeping, eating well, and drinking water — I don’t need caffeine so I've been ok! I do miss coffee though… To quickly summarize the way I eat the rest of the day: I eat super clean, love me some carbs, and I try to make sure I eat spinach with every meal. I am Popeye.
I workout 2-3 hours a day. After, I must shower (omg Micah finally). I use Dr. Bronner’s soap and Alba lotion on my body. The ingredients are minimal and I’m about that. I use Miss Jessie’s to style my curly hair. I wash my hair probably once a month so I don’t buy shampoo. I just use whatever is in the house that is sulfate free (usually my Dr. Bronner’s soap). I have tried everything and anything in my hair. I even had a phase where I was using only coconut oil for EVERYTHING. I had to stop, because when I would sweat in ballet, whatever chemistry was happening with my sweat and coconut oil made my leotards and hair smell absolutely rancid. We live and we learn.
I use Mario Badescu face washes, lotions, masks—everything for my face. But what I love the most are the oils/serums. I find they make my face glow like a pregnant woman. I love Tom’s toothpaste, and yes: it works. I don’t wear makeup to ballet unless I was already wearing it earlier that day and didn’t have time to wash it off. There’s no point in wearing makeup while sweating and I like the look of naturally rouged skin from working out. I generally never wear makeup unless I have a meeting or know photos will be taken of my face. When I do wear makeup, I wear Glossier concealer, boy brow, and the balm and spray my face with Mario Badescu rose spray. Glossier products give me that natural, pregnancy glow I mentioned sans baby. If I want to look g00d, I add Milani lip liner in "all natural,” L’Oreal mascara, and MAC mineralized bronzer. ALSO: I add fake freckles to my face using a brown eyeliner. SHH DON’T TELL!!!! I believe that everyone looks better when their natural skin shows. If I have acne, I don’t wear makeup. I personally feel acne looks worse covered in makeup. I don’t even own foundation. If I need my makeup to look REALLY good, I just do the above makeup routine realllyyyy slowwwwwwlyyyyy.
My mom stopped doing my hair in middle school and then I took over. In 6th grade, I let my hair knot so badly by NEVER combing it. I just kept brushing back the frizz and putting it in a ballet bun. One day she looked at me and said calmly but terrifyingly, “Come here.” She took my bun out and it was A SINGULAR DREAD LOCK. She combed my hair out and I cried and cried and cried. Ever since that day, I have combed my hair out (almost) every day. Frustrated mixed girls! All together now: lkjaslkdfjalskdjfiajieoakl;fskajslkdfjalksjdflkajslkdfjsakf
That being said, I do love my hair. I used to wear it straight and blonde all the time. Although, I don’t think it looked bad, I do feel much more myself now that I’ve accepted my black curls. Yes it’s a lot of work to have curls, but mostly, it’s so much less work to just be myself. But don’t let any of these pics fool you — my hair is OFTEN in a bun. And not just because of ballet. Ain't nobody got time to comb out my curls everyday! Seriously… Nobody does. I beg everyone...
What are you?????? A human. Haha see below:
My mom is from Grenada, an island in the Caribbean right above Trinidad. It’s super small and not very touristy so many people haven’t heard of it. You know what that means? GO!!!! It’s much better than a super touristy, Americanized island. My dad is from a small town outside Pittsburgh, but his family is Eastern European. The area we’re from is now the Czech Republic, but I think when my family was there it could have been Hungary, and obviously was Czechoslovakia at one point. I guess it’s just easier for me to say I’m Eastern European but I do feel connected to Czech culture and my grandmother spoke Czech. My hWhite father loves to touch my curls and I always yell at him because he frizzes them but I know it’s all love.
There’s kind of a cap on how much my black mother and white father could have taught me about being a mixed girl as they do not share my specific identity. Before college, all my friends were mostly white. In college, I made THREE COUNT EM THREE mixed friends (also black and white). We have shared so many tips and tricks and fails with each other. It’s been a beautiful learning experience.
To wrap it all up, I’m gonna be a cheese ball. If I could create the perfect beauty/wellness product for myself and anyone else, it would just be bottled self-acceptance and love. I created this idea years ago that I needed to love everything about myself— my frizzy curls and my acne prone skin because WHAT IF ONE DAY ALL THE BEAUTY COMPANIES JUST CEASED TO EXIST? We would need to love ourselves exactly how we were born, right? We only have one body and face. And hey — if you decide to have kids one day they might look exactly like you and you would NEVER think your kids are ugly. AND YOU’RE NOT EITHER!!! Enjoy the skin you’re in.
